How to Start an AAUP Chapter

Step 1: Be in touch!

Email the state conference  and national AAUP to let us know that you want to start a chapter. We can help with everything from identifying AAUP members to bylaws and

Step 2: Gather a Core Group

Identify current AAUP members or prospective members on campus who are committed to forming a chapter. A strong core group is essential for long-term sustainability and campus impact.

Step 3: Define Your Governance & Elect Officers

Draft campus bylaws that outline the structure and procedures for your new chapter. These should align with national standards while addressing specific local campus needs. Conduct an initial meeting to formalize the group and elect local officers, including a president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. Assign roles clearly to ensure smooth operations.

Step 4: Formal Application

Submit your formal application and bylaws to the national and state AAUP offices. This process includes proving your membership count and demonstrating institutional relevance.

Step 5: Official Recognition

Once approved, your chapter will be officially recognized by the AAUP. You can then begin organizing events, advocating for policy changes, and fostering a community of engaged faculty.
